The COVID-19 Pandemic forced entrepreneurs to shift their business plans to survive the seemingly endless international health crisis. New York fashion icon and Project Runway alumnus Christian Siriano stocked local hospitals with PPE while two Californians started a sanitation service that regularly provides deep-cleaning services to companies in need. In Perth, Australia, one plastic surgeon entered the antibacterial hand sanitizer and fashion industry.
Renowned Australian plastic surgeon, Dr. Anh Nguyen is MBBS and FRACS certified with more than a decade of experience. She’s referred to as one of the most brilliant minds in her field, and her multi-award-winning practice reflects her dedication. Located in Crown Metropol, Dr. Anh Medispa primarily deals with cosmetic breast surgery, tummy tucks, wrinkle relaxers, and fillers.
Dr. Anh’s entrepreneurial spirit has helped her easily adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic. While she stopped performing elective surgeries on March 25th, due to a nation-wide order to preserve medical resources, she’s used her time off to expand her business into other industries.
Entering the Hand Sanitizer Industry
As COVID infections rose, Dr. Nguyen, like many Australians, struggled to find hand sanitizer. According to an interview with Daily Mail Australia, Dr. Nguyen was: “…frustrated that [she] couldn’t get any hand sanitizer. [She] would spend entire Sundays, [her] only day off, searching department stores, chemists and supermarkets, which is time-consuming and risky in the current climate.” Concerned that other Australians faced a similar plight, Nguyen created a new line of hand sanitizer.
Dr. Nguyen partnered with Bioptica, a local company that specializes in non-toxic cleaning products, to create her alcohol-free hand sanitizer that eliminates 99.9% of germs. Her familiarity with news stories describing horrific burns from alcohol-based hand sanitizers leads her to create this product. Dr. Anh’s Antibacterial Hand Sanitiser and Protectant is a safe and effective way to kill germs without drying your hands, as the product also contains tea tree oil and aloe vera extract. The product is effective for up to 24 hours and is available online to both Australian and international consumers.
Entering the Fashion Industry
As Australia entered its first lockdown, Dr. Nguyen began toying with fabrics to make various clothing pieces as a way to stay busy while her plastic surgery practice remained closed. Her experience working in her parents’ clothing factory gave her the knowledge and skillset to create her clothing line, “Empower by Dr. Anh.” Her brand emphasizes body-positivity and self-worth and flatters every body type. This season’s outfits include comfortable wrap dresses, jumpsuits, sweatshirts, leggings, and sports bras, and many of these pieces can be dressed up depending on how you choose to accessorize them.
To promote Empower’s mission, Dr. Nguyen hosted several events throughout 2020. The most recent was Empower 2020, where Dr. Nguyen officially launched her clothing line. Designed by Dr. Anh Nguyen and created by Steph Audino, the Empower line places great emphasis on everyone’s inherent value and beauty. The event was DJed by Kayty Banks, with a performance by pianist and singer Rebecca Rupp. World-renowned sexologist Chantelle Otten spoke at the event along with several local entrepreneurs. Finally, in a bold act of self-love, Dr. Nguyen’s own patients walked the runway.
Dr. Anh’s Skincare Empire
Dr. Nguyen’s ability to successfully expand her business is based on her previous experience. Prior to the pandemic, she launched her own skincare line that offers cleansers, day serums, creams, and moisturizers customized to improve every aspect of your skin. Her online shop offers a skincare range for women, men, and fake eyelashes. Recently, her skincare line was named one of the “Top Skin Care Lines for Mums” by Now. While Dr. Nguyen offers one-on-one consultations to find the best products for you, she’s made a special online quiz to help protect customers in the face of the COVID epidemic. Skincare enthusiasts can order online or in-store.
Despite the challenges of the epidemic, Dr. Nguyen hasn’t slowed down. Besides running her own skincare, sanitizer, and clothing line, Dr. Nguyen is still performing miracles at her practice. Currently, Dr. Nguyen is following the Department of Health’s guidelines to reduce the risk of COVID-19. All patients must follow social distancing rules and wear a mask before being seen by a member of the practice. Patients should also monitor any COVID-like symptoms they might have. If you or a loved one experiences any symptoms of COVID-19, such as fever, chills, cough, or shortness of breath, please contact your local healthcare provider.
What does the future hold for Dr. Anh’s Medispa? She plans to continue helping patients feel beautiful and discover their self-worth through surgical and non-invasive treatments and through more Empower events. She also plans to continue expanding her skincare and clothing lines.
