“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” – Socrates
Mindset is without-a-doubt the most significant tool you can have, and is critical to achieving any type of real growth and development. It can be expressed essentially as the perspective that will set the tone for anything and everything that you do in life. Why does mindset really matter, and why is it so important for growth both personally and professionally? A growth mindset is simply the belief that our basic abilities can be developed and then improved through dedication and hard work. It’s not so much that this belief is some kind of magic. It is merely the fact that, without this growth mindset, we don’t exert the required effort needed for progression, and therefore we remain perpetually stuck. So, in short, if you want to do more than just maintain your current standing in life and you have a desire to “level-up” in your career, your life, your finances, or really anything, a strong mindset is key. Your mindset ultimately guides you through every decision you make along the way to accomplishing your goals in your career, and in your life.
We spoke with Matt Carpenter, one of the top leading young professionals in the credit consulting and repair space, about how he built a name for himself in his industry using these strategies. He let us in on the big secrets and little tricks you can use to build a strong mindset using the “4 C’s”, Confidence, Consistency, Courage, and Cognizance.
I once read that confidence is the sexiest, and most attractive trait that one can possess. Having belief in yourself and what you do is crucial to really any endeavor you undertake in life, even (and especially) in times when you may not know everything about what it is you are going after. In this instance, the old saying, “fake it til you make it” becomes particularly useful. Having confidence that you can and will achieve your goals is the first step to establishing a strong mindset. This will lead you to know and understand that these goals are always within your reach, and that your mindset will lead you to success. It also reinforces the fact that you are worthy and deserving of the success that comes with all of the hard-work you do along the path to achieving those goals.
The next step to developing a strong mindset revolves around the daily thoughts, habits, and actions you take in your everyday life. Every action you take and decision you make should lead you to each one of your goals, which should ultimately bring you to the final destination that you desire. In order to build upon this aspect of your mindset, you need to come up with a plan for exactly what it is that you need to do, consistently, in order to get to the next step in reaching that next goal. For example, if you are a salesperson, and you know you have to reach a certain amount in commission every month to cover bills, expenses, and anything you want to have leftover, you can set a monetary goal that you want to reach per month. Then, you would break down the steps you need to take to reach that goal, and then the habits you need to develop to be able to take those steps. And be consistent in taking them. If you know that you need to get up early and workout in order to keep a clear focus for the day, or to get a jumpstart on contacting prospective leads, then make it a habit to get up at the right time every single day. Have a set morning routine so that you can get off on the right foot and know that you are taking that next step in the right direction.
The next step in this mindset training requires you to dig deeper into yourself and your desires, and discover what it is that motivates you to want to do better and be better. And then use that to harness your ability to take action on this motivation and whatever risk may come along with it. Become brave enough to take on any and every challenge that comes your way, and realize that it is all part of a bigger process and learning experience that will only better you in the long run. You can handle any objection, any set-back and any bump in the road along the way, and you can handle it astoundingly better than you may have originally believed you could. Having confidence in yourself and being courageous every single day, regardless of the circumstances, can only result in the best possible outcome for any situation.
Cognizance is specifically defined as, “knowledge, awareness, or notice.” For our purposes, being cognizant also means taking responsibility for yourself. Being cognizant means you need to become in sync with your thoughts, actions and emotions, and be aware at all times of what you are doing and why you’re doing it. This will also mean you work to become more aware of what you need to do, for you, in order to get to where you want to be. With an everyday mindset of confidence, consistency, courage and cognizance, you build the foundation for how you will handle any task at hand, overcome every obstacle, and achieve every goal. Utilizing a strong mindset to the fullest extent of your abilities is basically a guarantee that you can and will succeed at anything you wish to do in life. Use it wisely.
