Vail is a top ski destination. Every winter, snowboarders and skiers travel from all over the world to Vail Colorado to enjoy the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountain conditions. The snow is soft, powdery and beautiful. There are runs that go for miles and you can find terrain that suits all skill levels.

Vail skiing is also known for its exclusivity and prestige. Vail is ranked higher than Aspen for luxury and elegance by some travel experts. Vail is also one the most friendly places in the world. However, it can be expensive so it’s worth planning your trip ahead.

This guide will help you make the most of your snowboarding or skiing vacation. It will allow you weigh all your options without breaking the bank.

How to get to Vail

If you’re flying into Colorado, there are two options. Denver International Airport (DIA), or Eagle Regional Airport(EGE). It takes about 30 minutes to drive from Eagle airport to Vail. Traveling from Denver International to Vail will take approximately 2 hours – 2.5 hours.

If you arrive during winter, please allow extra time due to hazardous roads. Authorities may close the main interstate for safety reasons. If you are expecting heavy snowfall, please allow extra time for your return trip from Vail to Denver.

 Vail Transportation Options

You will need to choose your mode of transport once you arrive at the airport. There are several options to consider. Each option has its benefits. Let’s take a closer glance at some of them:

Renting a Car

You can rent a car. There are a variety of national brand car rental agencies at both airports. It is a good idea to reserve your car rental well in advance. Due to high demand, rates can be quite expensive during peak seasons.

But please be aware, parking in Vail is expensive and difficult to find. Parking is not free at most hotels, so it will cost you extra each day. Also, gas prices in the mountains are typically between 15 and 25% higher than the rest of Colorado.

Driving in winter is another consideration – it can be dangerous.

Vail by Shared Shuttle

Many shared shuttle companies offer routes to Vail from Denver International and Eagle Regional Airports. Shuttles are very affordable and run on regular times.

Vail Resorts owns Epic Mountain Express, which provides a convenient way for travelers to travel from airports to their resort destinations, including Vail. Prices start at $85 per person. You can make reservations online or by phone. The shuttles run on a regular schedule but not 24 hours.

Summit Express, is a family-owned and operated shared shuttle company. They also provide scheduled service between the airports. Service is not available 24 hours a day so reservations should be made in advance to ensure availability.

Peak1 Express: Operates in a similar manner. They have been operating in Vail Valley for more than a decade. Peak1 Express is a great alternative if the other shared shuttles are booked ful..

Although a shared shuttle service is a cost-effective way to travel to Vail from Denver, EGE or Denver, there are some drawbacks:

  1. Prices are per person and not per group. This is the best option if you’re traveling alone or with a friend. This isn’t an option if you are traveling with a large family or group.
  2. It takes longer. It is necessary to wait for all passengers to board the shuttle. You may also need to make additional stops to reach your lodging, which can significantly increase travel time.
  3. These services do not run 24 hours/day. They usually have the last shuttle departing at 6 pm, so if you arrive after that time you will be out of luck.

These are all very important considerations before you book a shared shuttle.

A Private Airport Shuttle Service

You can also hire a private vehicle service to travel to Vail. Although these aren’t cheap and may seem intimidating at first, they can actually be very affordable and convenient. Private airport shuttle services between DIA and Vail currently cost between $400-$500

These are the top benefits of using a private airport shuttle:

1) The price is per vehicle is not per person. A private luxury vehicle costs less than a shared shuttle ticket for everyone if you are traveling with 5 or more people in your group.

2) There are many free in-town shuttles that will take you to the ski slopes and restaurants, so having your own rental car is really not necessary at all.

3) Private shuttles operate 24/7. No matter when your flight arrives, you can still get from the airport to your lodging.

4) Drivers will help you with your luggage, which is something you don’t want to deal with after a long flight. They can also tell you about the best places to eat, the best runs and upcoming events, as well as any other information you may need. This level of personal attention is impossible with shared shuttle operators.

The Best Way to Get to Vail This Winter

There you have it. There are many ways to get to Vail, Colorado. For the best comfort and convenience, choose a chauffeured private car and relax while you enjoy the ride through the Rockies.

After all, people go to Vail to have fun and not to worry about road conditions or parking. A private shuttle from the airport is more cost-effective than a shared van in many circumstances, and is definitely more comfortable and convenient.

However you decide to travel to Vail, be sure to have a wonderful time.

Safe travels everyone!
